Herbal medicine is the use of plant-based medicine to treat both the body and mind, with research suggesting herbs can enhance immunity, restoring health and vitality.
Herbs are one of the oldest forms of medicine in the world and their traditional use can be traced back thousands of years. Clinical observation and modern research have confirmed herbal medicines place in the treatment and understanding of the human body and disease.
I am a qualified medical herbalist who lives and works in the beautiful setting of West Wales.
I have been interested in herbal medicine for many years. When my children were small my interest developed as I looked for alternatives to conventional medicines for minor ailments. I undertook a years correspondence course in herbal medicine with the School of Phytotherapy and started learning as much as I could about herbs and their uses. I began to harvests herbs and make my own herbal products, something which has now become a real passion of mine.
When my children left home I decided to start my journey to becoming a qualified Medical Herbalist. I was accepted for the BSc in Herbal Medicine at Lincoln College and qualified in 2017 with first-class honours. Over the three years of the degree, I studied many aspects of Western herbal medicine including Materia Medica, philosophy and history of herbal medicine, anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, energetics and clinical skills. I completed 500 hours of clinical training before qualifying.
I have undertaken a course in Chinese Herbal Medicine which has enhanced my practice and widened my understanding of herbs and their uses.
Drawing on my knowledge of both traditional and modern herbal medicine and my background in social science and research I offer a unique herbal medical service that includes; individual consultation and treatment, workshops and talks about herbs and their uses.
I am a practising director of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists and am committed to running an ethical and environmentally friendly practice where possible. I harvest many of the herbs I use locally and I make a number of herbal products myself.
Herbal medicine takes a holistic approach to health, looking at the underlying cause of the disease and illness rather than just the symptoms. Herbal medicine can be of use for many different ailments including both acute conditions and long-term chronic illness.
Today’s fast pace and stressful living can take its toll on health, herbal medicine provides an excellent natural way to re-balance the body and mind.
What Can Herbal Medicine Treat?
As a qualified medical herbalist, I have the training and I am experienced in using herbal medicine safely alongside orthodox medicine and where appropriate at your request I can keep your GP/consultant fully informed of the treatment you are receiving.
People of all ages can benefit from herbal medicine and patients consult a medical herbalist with many different health complaints similar to those they would visit a doctor with. This includes digestive, circulation, respiratory, skin and cardiovascular conditions, sleep, fatigue and emotional issues including stress and anxiety, hormonal imbalance such as menopausal, menstruation and fertility issues, musculoskeletal conditions such as arthritis and auto-immune disease. The advantage of visiting a medical herbalist is that they will take the time to listen to you and discuss your health with you. They will then use their knowledge, experience and expertise to work with you to tailor a treatment individually to meet your health needs, including advice on diet and nutrition.
