I am a qualified medical herbalist who lives and works in the beautiful setting of West Wales.

I have been interested in herbal medicine for many years. When my children were small my interest developed as I looked for alternatives to conventional medicines for minor ailments. I undertook a years correspondence course in herbal medicine with the School of Phytotherapy and started learning as much as I could about herbs and their uses. I began to harvests herbs and make my own herbal products, something which has now become a real passion of mine.

When my children left home I decided to start my journey to becoming a qualified Medical Herbalist. I was accepted for the BSc in Herbal Medicine at Lincoln College and qualified in 2017 with first-class honours.  Over the three years of the degree, I studied many aspects of Western herbal medicine including Materia Medica, philosophy and history of herbal medicine, anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, energetics and clinical skills. I completed 500 hours of clinical training before qualifying.

I have undertaken a course in Chinese Herbal Medicine which has enhanced my practice and widened my understanding of herbs and their uses.

Drawing on my knowledge of both traditional and modern herbal medicine and my background in social science and research I offer a unique herbal medical service that includes; individual consultation and treatment, workshops and talks about herbs and their uses.
I am a practising director of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists and am committed to running an ethical and environmentally friendly practice where possible. I harvest many of the herbs I use locally and I make a number of herbal products myself.

Patient Testimonials

Terri Larkin 2022

I have been treated by Paula since 2017, initially to support my system as I came off of the progesterone medication I’d been on to manage heavy periods. This worked really well and I had no I’ll effects from terminating it.

More recently I was diagnosed with Polymyalgia Rheumatica and had extreme pain, stiffness in my joints and muscles. I also felt exhausted all the time with a foggy head. I did see my GP and bloods showed my inflammation markers were raised. I was advised to take steroids to diagnose what the issue maybe. This I did, I was on them for 9 days before seeing the GP again to discuss the results. I can’t lie, the pain and stiffness had gone.. however, I had experienced such awful side effects, constant headache, continuous nausea to the point I didn’t want to eat. When I did eat, to take meds, the food went right through me within 20-30 minutes. I lost 4kg in those 9 days.

The day before I went to see my GP I contacted Paula to see if there was a herbal way to treat the Polymyalgia. Paula reassured me that even if the herbal route didn’t treat the Poly, then she could definitely support my system to manage steroids, if I had to take them.

After discussing all the issues with the GP, who was actually really supportive and listened, took on board all I said but said, not taking steroids was not his recommendation, however it was my body and my discussion.

Paula has been treating me now for 4 months and I can honestly say, I have gradually improved in pain and stiffness and today I’m putting finger to keyboard because this weekend is the best I’ve felt if I’m honest for over a year.

I know my journey isn’t over and I need to continue with the treatment but at least there will be no nasty side effects or compromised immunity or bone density issues, that I could have in steroids.

Thank you Paula ????

I went to Paula for a consultation last year, as my left thumb had been diagnosed (by my GP) as suffering from arthritis, and the beginnings of Dupuytren's contracture (Viking hand) had been diagnosed in both hands. My doctor offered remedies to manage these conditions, but did not know of any permanent remedies other than surgical.

Paula provided herbal remedies for both of these conditions over the last year that did more than simply manage them - they have both literally disappeared! There is no pain in my thumb and only one tiny bump left in one hand from Viking hand.

I am in my 60s and was very concerned about the impact on my life of these conditions, and I am so very grateful to Paula for her amazing herbal remedies.

And the story doesn't stop there. Paula has helped me with numerous smaller conditions, and another serious one, since then.

She's absolutely amazing!

I've been coming to Paula for the last 18 months for various reasons. Her knowledge of natural herbs and remedies is absolutely insane! I truly believe she has a remedy for everything. She's been an oracle of advice and support over recent months and has helped me to manage my asthma to the point that I rarely need to rely on steroids anymore.

Paula's supported me through a lengthy period of acute sciatic nerve pain caused by a protusion of my L5/S1 disc. Her consultations are thorough and her manner is warm and friendly. I believe her treatments have really helped me in my recovery, and protected my system against the side effects of the considerable amount of conventional medication I've had to take over the last 6 months. Highly recommended. 5*

Paula has a wonderful ability to distil all that I tell her into a powerful remedy that really sorts me out. She has an innate intuition for choosing the right herbs and a deep understanding of all aspects of herbalism. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend her. And this summer I had her new hayfever remedy - what amazing stuff! No need for my conventional hayfever tablets. I shall definitely be back for more of that next spring.
Thanks Paula!

I went to see Paula to try and get to the bottom of some minor health issues I’d been having. When I entered my early 40s I felt the full effects of hormonal imbalance and it was affecting me in various ways, to the point where it was disrupting my daily life.

At the consultation, Paula was very thorough; she went through all of the issues and asked questions so that we had a full picture of what I was dealing with. Then she made me medicine, and we commenced treatment over the next 3 months. The results were gradual but after I’d finished the course, I felt so much better that I ordered another 3 months medicine from her (I live some way away so she was kind enough to post it to me).

One of the things I wanted to be able to do was have an occasional glass of wine again without feeling anxious and unwell. Happy to say that this has been restored and that all the other issues have receded, so much so that I don’t even think about them.

I would highly recommend Paula for her help with health issues and will go back to her again next time I’m in the area. Thorough, professional and above all, effective!

Thanks Paula!

I have been very ill since Christmas with Diverticulitis and inflammation in my bowel. I could only eat chicken broth, I was constantly nauseated and in pain.

All my scans were normal and I was at my wits end. I contacted Paula as she had treated me before. After a full consultation she gave me herbal treatments of teas, liquid herbs solution and some in powder form.  After 6 weeks I am a different person, pain free, eating more types of food but being very careful. I am back in work and enjoying myself. Still the medical profession has not come up with a definite diagnosis. Thank you so much for all your help.

“The hot flushes I was experiencing were driving me crazy, especially the night-time ones. I thought that due to my age I just had to put up with it, which, I wasn’t really very happy about if truth be told. I’m leaving HRT as a last option due to family medical history, and as I’d heard good things about ‘The Herbalist at the clock tower’, I wondered if maybe it might be worth a try.

I’ve had several consultations with Paula who made adjustments to each medicine she dispensed following each consultation. Every time I went back I was able to report fewer and fewer flushes - until my last consultation when I had to think really hard; only to realise I haven’t had one hot flush in the last month. Happy Days!
Thank you Paula, you’ve made an old lady much cooler!”

“Called into the clock tower for a little look and was lucky enough to stumble into the herbalist clinic. Came out with rose creams, orange sprays and delicious teas. What a hidden gem in Newcastle Emlyn. I’ll be visiting again soon to stock up for myself and I can’t wait until Xmas to get lovely gifts and stocking fillers.

I got some insect repellent and bite cream for my trip to Asia. I didn’t get bitten once!

Added bonus was that a bite I’d had two summers ago which just wouldn’t heal properly cleared up after less than a weeks worth of application of the bite cream.

Wow Paula! I am very impressed, thank you, finally my calf has stopped itching!

Added bonus is that Paula is such a lovely lady, clearly passionate about what she does and very knowledgeable.”
